3DR Take 5th Victory In Succession!!!

A dry but fresh Saturday test greeted the team at Whilton Mill last weekend for Round 10 of the club championship. Junior driver Will Blackwell-Chambers lined up alongside recent revelation Dominic Russell in Senior Rotax. With the championship out of his grasp, Dominic is looking to take the last 4 races of the season, as he had won the previous 2.

After a long layoff, a tough weekend was in store for Will. Taking all day for him to get back into the seat, he ended the day looking capable of a top 10 finish from the 34 strong grid of Juniors. The team dominated proceedings in the Senior test sessions, Dominic topping the time sheets all day, at some points by up to 5 tenths of a second per lap! All looked good, but with rain forecast overnight, anything could have happened on Sunday.

A wet, miserable morning saw the team have to re-prepare both karts for the rain. Will drove well in heat one, driving from 28th to 16th inside the reduced 6 lap heat. However, a disaster in heat 2 (he managed to come off the circuit 4 times inside 3 laps) meant that he could only secure 23rd, even though he had the pace to win the race. A steady heat 3 ensured 18th place on the grid for the Basingstoke youngster.

Dominic managed to secure 2nd in heat 1, from a very racy Danny Drew, with championship leader Danny Payne 3rd. A mistake with the tyre pressures in heat 2 troubled Dom, but sticking at it he eventually finished 11th. In heat 3, Dom took the fastest lap, and drove from 27th to 7th. With no rain all day, the circuit finally dried out for the finals. Dom would start the race from the outside of row 2.

Will got a good start in his final, and moved past 3 drivers on lap 1. He slotted into 13th, chasing David DeRosa. With numerous opportunities to overtake his opponent, Will left it too late, and any chance of a top 10 finish was gone. On lap 7 he got tagged entering Turn 6, and pushed off the circuit. What could have been his best final result, ended in him recovering to 17th.

‘Will has shown some signs of possessing speed this weekend. His age is an issue, as he should be racing in the lesser Minimax category. If Will can get his head down and shed the 12kgs that we had outlined for him in Jul, then he still can improve. He needs to be a more dynamic thinker on-track, and to work on his arm strength. Before this happens, he will struggle to improve as a driver. Still, some improvement has been seen, and he has definitely become fitter over the past 6 months.’ Team Manager, Tom Smith

With Payne on grid 2 for the final, a good start for the outside row saw him take the lead from Dominic. The pair took a massive lead on lap 1, before the Black and yellow quartered flag slowed the grid. At the restart, a 2 second advantage was secured over the chasing pack. Dominic made a hard move on Payne at Turn 3, and steadily increased his advantage to take the win by over a second! Another victory for Dominic makes it 3 on the trot for the team at Whilton, and 5 consecutive wins without a loss!

‘The team are on top of their game at the minute. With 7 victories in 8 race meetings from Danny, Dominic and Henry, everyone is on a high. Hopefully this success can be carried through to national and European level in 2009! But for now we will work as hard as ever to welcome some new drivers to the team. I like how results focused we are, and this needs to carry on indefinitely. Overall, very good performances have put us in a strong position within the whole industry.’ Team Principle, Don Russell.
