Victory for 3DR at Whilton!!

35° of sintering heat greeted the team all weekend for what was to be a crucial weekends racing in the club championship. With the top 3 drivers in Senior Rotax covered by minimal points, the team had to ensure a good points haul for Dominic. The teams junior protégé Will Blackwell-Chambers was also in action.

A test programme was rigidly worked to on Saturday, leaving the team in a strong position for the race day. Dominic was capable of lapping around 3 tenths up on the field, whilst Will had improved his PB lap time of Whilton down from 47.6 to 47.4.

‘The team have worked hard today. Dominic is in good shape for tomorrow and we want to keep his recent run of form going. Our junior driver, Will has improved immensely over the past month. There is still a long way to go with him, but he is becoming more committed to his racing. We have issued Will with a fitness regime to aid him for the rest of this, and hopefully next season. We are confident of a strong showing from both drivers tomorrow,’ Tom Smith, Team Manager.

The heat once again built up throughout the qualifying heats on Sunday morning, with the temperature peaking at 36°! However, the teams drivers did a solid job, despite Will going off in his 2nd heat. A 1st, 2nd and 5th were enough to secure a front row start for Dominic. With fastest laps in all 3 heats, a grownup drive was surely all that was needed to secure victory for the team. Will finished a career best 3rd in heat 1, and after being taken out in heat 2 recovered to 15th, with an 11th place in heat 3. A 3rd row grid slot for the youngster who has never before finished a race inside the top 15 at the Northamptonshire circuit exceeded all expectations.

As the karts lined up on the grid for the Junior Rotax ‘A’ final, Will prepared himself for what would be the toughest test of his karting career. Surrounded by more experienced and recognised drivers, he took the start, slotting comfortably into 10th place after a slow start from his side of the grid. On lap 2 he passed a flailing Rossano Bhandal to move into 9th. Just off the train of drivers at the front, Will lapped more consistently than ever before, shaving another 2 tenths off his fast lap time at the track. He eventually finished 15 laps later in 9th position, with a best time just 3 tenths of a second off of the eventual winner of the race.

Dominic slotted in behind pole sitter and championship leader Danny Payne on lap 1 of the Senior Rotax final, before using slipstream to take the lead on just lap 2. Payne and Danny Drew tried in vain to close in on the 3DR driver, but to no avail as Dominic eventually took the chequered flag 14 laps later by 2 seconds with the fastest lap of the race!

‘I am very impressed with how the team worked this weekend. It is great to see such improvement from Will, at the same time as Dominic strengthening his championship attack. A spot on performance all round, and hopefully the team will arrive with more confidence next month, as Danny makes his return after 3 months out of racing,’ Don Russell, Team Principle.

The team now look forward to completing 2 initial tests with new minimax driver, Henry Jackson, ahead of his 3DR debut in August at Kimbolton. More news will follow regarding the young hopeful, so watch this space!
